Earlier this month a federal appeals court only overturned a verdict against the Westboro Baptist "Church," the loons led by the Rev. Fred Phelps. They're the group best known for protesting at soldiers' funerals while holding signs that read "God Hates Fags." The "church" really is a amalgamation of a couple of families; they believe God hates this country because America tolerates homosexuality--so Phelps' mob pickets military funerals.
Yeah, I don't get it either.
What I know for sure is that the Tea Party Express is coming to Topeka, Kansas, tomorrow, where Phelps' brood is based. That's the "church" in the picture--yes, the banner says "Godhatesamerica.com."
About the case: In 2007 a federal jury awarded the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder $11 million in damages for intentionally causing the Marine's family emotional distress--the rabble picketed Snyder's funeral. That verdict was later reduced, but in addition to having that verdict tossed, the appeals court ordered the Snyder family to pay Westboro's legal bills--$16,150.
The family is appealing to the US Supreme Court, but a whole bunch of patriots have offered to help the Snyders with that payment, most prominently Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, who has offered to cover all of it.
Topeka is a great town--and I'm sure plenty of decent Kansans will be in attendance. Which has me wondering, if God really does hate America, then shouldn't Phelps' loudmouths show up at the Tea Party Express rally? But my guess is that they won't bother protesting this event in their hometown. They're bullies--it's easier to harass grieving people than several thousand patriotic Americans. It's not on their list of pickets.
Friday's rally is at 10:00am at the state capitol, where inside you can view the famous John Brown mural. Then it's on to Tulsa.
