SCOTUS to hear Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps case

The Reverend Fred Phelps, the Kansan whose cult-like congregation shows up at military funerals with signs such as "God Hates Fags" and "God Loves Dead Soldiers," is back in the news.

Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church was slapped with a $5 million verdict for violating a Maryland law that bans protests within close proximity of a funeral. The church picketed the funeral of a Marine who was killed in Iraq in 2006. The verdict has since been tossed out, but the father of the soldier has appealed to have it reinstated. Phelps claims the First Amendment protects his protests. His beef with America is that our tolerance of homosexuality has brought on the wrath of God, and every natural disaster and as well as events such as 9/11 is divine punishment for taking this path.

In short, Phelps is a loon.
