Good friend-of-the-blog Pat Hickey writes about a Chicago Civil War hero, Col. James A. Mulligan, commander of the 23rd Illinois Infantry, who died from the wounds he received in the 1864 Battle of Winchester.A few months later, Joseph Henry Ruberry, my great-grandfather, joined the the 23rd Illinois, which was also known as "the Irish Brigade." In 1865 the regiment served in the decisive Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns.
