A little-known centennial anniversary occurs today. It was on this day in 1910 that the Angel Island immigration station, pictured on the right, opened. The island is located just north of the infamous Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. It's been called "the Ellis Island of the West," but that's not quite right. The station was built with a less-welcoming goal in mind--to keep people out, mainly Asians.
The station was closed in 1940, the military moved out in 1962, and the island is now part of the California state park system.
