Ill. gov race: Greg Hinz on "Me"Kenna's debate duck

Andy "Me"Kenna McKenna, the candidate with the fattest wallet--there's a lot of money in his family--is skipping the last three Republican gubernotorial debates, probably because he doesn't want to answer any Pollgate questions.

Here is the take of Crain's Chicago Business' Greg Hinz:

Andy McKenna Jr. is citing that old standard — "schedule conflict" — as the reason he won't be able to attend debates on WTTW-TV/Channel 11 Tuesday night and WLS-AM radio Wednesday evening.

Mr. McKenna is scheduled to be downstate and "can't do two things at once," a spokesman says, noting that he participated in four debates with his foes weeks earlier in the campaign season.

But a spokesman for WTTW notes that the PBS station first invited candidates to Tuesday's event on Nov. 19. And the WLS event is, um, on radio. They must not have phones that work in places like Peoria and Sterling, where Mr. McKenna is scheduled to be.

Had he been at either event, Mr. McKenna surely would have faced more questions about that poll he authorized when he was still state GOP chairman, a poll that included his name in a list of prospective candidates.
