Literature: Two famous Christmas departures

Christmas figures into two of the greatest novels of the English language. The Pequod, the doomed whaling ship, left Nantucket on Christmas Day in Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

And in The Lord of the Rings, the Nine Walkers departed Rivendell on December 25. Although author J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Catholic, Christianity's influence on that book is only an indirect one. Still, Tolkien declared Lord of the Rings "fundamentally religious and Catholic."
