Upper Peninsula Upventure: Whitefish Point

Besides the lighthouse I chronicled earlier, Whitefish Point, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula is known for sand dunes, fabulous birdwatching, and a commanding view of Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay.

I was there in late August, when the lake water is the warmest--which means swimming is part of the mix at the point.

As for the birds, the bird shelter on the right allows birders to blend in amongst the surroundings.

Whitefish Bay is the easternmost part of Lake Superior, the big lake flows into St. Mary's River and the Soo Locks, which makes ship watching another popular pasttime for visitors to the point.
