The Gogebic Range has two meanings. One refers to the Gobebic Mountains, which are really hills. The second regards an iron range--the area was once dotted with iron mines. I took this photograph from the top of a ski slope in Ironwood. It's not named for the tree, but for an early resident who worked in an iron mine.
Tourism dollars is what is mined in Ironwood now. Besides skiing, snowmobiling and ATV adventures are among the attractions in the Upper Peninsula's westernmost town.
