McDonald's Museum in Des Plaines

The McDonald's chain was started by the McDonalds Brothers in southern California in 1940. Ray Kroc purchased the brothers' share of the chain, and the Kroc-captained McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955.

Amazingly, the original outlet was demolished in 1984.

But a recreation of that restaurant was built on the same site on Lee Street north of downtown Des Plaines. The sign, with "Speedee," the first McDonald's mascot, is an original.

The museum is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the summer.
