Palauans and Bermudans angry over Gitmo relocations

Shortly after becoming president, the day after, I believe, our Czar of Czars, Barack Obama, signed an executive order calling for the closing of the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center.

But he didn't have a plan as to what to do with the 240 or so inmates held there.

Apparently he still doesn't.

Several years ago seventeen Chinese Muslims, known as Uighurs, were cleared for release. But no one wanted them. Sending them back to China posed problems, as there is a genuine fear these men could faced persecution there.

The Republic of Palau, a small island nation near the Philippines that was once a United States UN trusteeship, has agreed to accept 13 Uighurs, which has angered many Palauans "who fear for the safety of the tranquil tourist haven."

Like Palau, Bermuda tends to end up in the news when a tropical storm wreaks havoc. But a differnet tempest was unleashed when Bermuda agreed to accept four Uighurs. Bermuda is a British dependency and ABC News' Jake Tapper reports the Brits are "pissed" about this action.

Once the arrive, the Uighurs could face culture shock.

The outrcy in Bermuda over the Chinese Muslims is even more hostile, as the Royal Gazette reports:

Reaction to the announcement that four Guantánamo Bay detainees have been relocated to the Island, was swift and overwhelming with The Royal Gazette being inundated with e-mails as well as comments on our Facebook page.

The number of e-mails was unprecedented, with no issue causing such an outpouring in recent memory.

E-mails to the news desk yesterday indicated that born Bermudians and foreign workers alike were opposed to the resettling of four Chinese Muslim Uighurs released from Guantánamo Bay.

Many who wrote in expressed outrage at Premier Dr. Ewart Brown's comment that the four former detainees will be "provided with the opportunity to become naturalised citizens" when many expatriate workers in Bermuda are denied long-term residency and forced to leave after six years.

What a royal mess. Meanwhile, Obama still has to come up with a plan...it's been five months...as to what to do with the 200 or so terrorists at Gitmo.

Who's left is the worst of the worst.
