In rebuke to Obama, Senate votes to block funding of Gitmo closing

Two days after he was sworn in as president, Barack Obama signed an executive order stating the Guantanamo Bay detention center would close within a year.

But Obama didn't have a plan regarding the 241 terrorists held there.

Signing executive orders is easy, getting the funding for them, well, that's the job of Congress.

This afternoon the US Senate voted 90-6 to withhold funding for the Gitmo closing.

· All of the "no" votes came from Democrats: Dick Durbin (IL), Tom Harkin (IA), Pat Leahy (VT), Carl Levin (MI), Jack Reed (RI), and Sheldon Whitehouse (RI).

It's a big win for the Republican Party, as Byron York explains here, and the Los Angeles Times' Top of the Ticket blog informs us here.

It's also a big win for people who want a safe America.
