Controversial Jackson Mayor Frank Melton dead at 60

As I blurbed earlier today, a recent topic at Marathon Pundit, controversial Jackson, Mississippi mayor Frank Melton, died early this morning.

Ten minutes after polls closed Tuesday night, Melton suffered an apparent heart attack--very much like Frank Skeffington's demise in The Last Hurrah. The first-term mayor finished third in the Democratic mayoral primary.

Next week Melton was to be retried for allegedly violating the civil rights of a Jackson resident whose home was stormed--without a warrant--by a sledgehammer wielding mob.

Melton also claimed that the problem of saggy pants was more important than the constitution, and he once pulled over a bus filled with high school students because he needed hugs.

He may have been America's worst mayor, but he was surely one of a kind.
