Glad to help out...

One of the great things about the internet is that you can find other people with similar interests--and they can find you.

The canal skating enthusiast who runs the Illinoisocht site took a liking to the photograph above of the Hennepin Feeder Canal, and kindly asked if he could use it, which of course I replied, "Yes."

I snapped the photo two months ago on Route 172 few miles east of Tampico, Illinois.

  1. And I asked when I first saw the photo if there were any "Hans Christian Anderson" types out there.

  3. How deep is Canal, and has anyone
Skated on it when it was recently
frozen? Wonder if that area around
the canal recieved as much as the
    Chicago area? An awesome Picture

  6. John--thanks, the photos are great because they show the sheet of ice going to the vanishing point in the photo.

The canal was originally dug to 7 feet, but much of it is often shallower given the build up of sediment and earth over the years. But it is watered throughout (deep enough for a canoe or very shallow draft fishing boat), in part owing to its relatively recent, better "technology" construction (concrete in the locks vs. stonework on the older I&M and most other transportation canals).

As to a skate, I was hoping to organize an informal outing but the window to skate was very narrow given most of the winter it was snow covered and then the thaw came in fast.
