About Illinois' next governor: Patrick Quinn

Okay, does anyone really think that Governor Rod Blagojevich can ride out this scandal and serve the rest of his term?

No way.

Think Richard Nixon after the "smoking gun" tape was released in 1974. Oh, he may hang on longer than "Tricky Dicky," but Blago is going bye-bye.

Patrick Quinn is the lieutenant governor. He's only statewide elected official not from Chicago, he lives in neighboring Oak Park.

Quinn will succeed his boss once Blagojevich resigns or is removed from office by the state Senate.

Quinn has been a tireless supporter for Illinois veterans and has been very helpful in fighting for the vets who had their scholarships rescinded by my alma mater, the University of Illinois.

Without fanfare or a press crew, Quinn attends every funeral for Illinois War on Terror vicitims.

But although he's distanced himself from Blagojevich since the pair were reelected in 2006, Quinn is the type an enabler that Joe Birkett referred to a couple of posts back.

The Illinois Republican Party explains in a press release sent this morning:

Before anyone gets too carried away with Pat Quinn's reinvention as a reformer, it is important to remember:

1.) Pat Quinn, in 2006, willing chose to run twice with Rod Blagojevich and reap the benefits of his ill-gotten campaign funds knowing Rod Blagojevich was under federal investigation.

2.) Pat Quinn, in 2006, was a direct beneficiary of the campaign commercials Rod Blagojevich used to get re-elected.

3.) Pat Quinn personally vouched for Rod Blagojevich in the Fall of 2006 saying:

SPRINGFIELD — Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn defended his running mate’s integrity Thursday, saying he saw nothing wrong with the governor’s 7-year-old daughter getting a $1,500 check from a family friend whose wife just got a state job.

"He's always been a person who’s honest and one of integrity," said Quinn, appearing at a Capitol news conference. "I have confidence the governor does the right thing all the time." Daily Herald, September 16, 2006

  1. Change.
    It gives me hope.
Thanks John for the mini-bio on Quinn. Support for Veterans buys him some time with this conservative Republican. He'll have to answer questions about his Blago statements soon. Like Obama, he's inheriting a train wreck, somewhat of his own party's making.
I wonder how he'll sleep tonight?

(Oh, and I couldn't agree more fervently... Blago is gone, and I think everyone knows that SOONER is better... get the healing started!)

Now let's sit back and watch this tragedy unfold.

Let's deal with something more important. Monday's P.M. Press Conference.

"Should the state members of the Electoral College cast their votes for Mr. Obama in the face of such overwhelming evidence, and without verification of Mr. Obama's eligibility, they would be committing treason to the Constitution," said Schulz.
