Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) could have done his party, and the nation, a favor by resigning when he was indicted in the summer shortly before the Republican Primary in Alaska. He didn't. He won the primary, but he lost the general election to Democrat Mark Begich.
The Democrats will enter the 111th Congress with 58 members. Two seats remain undecided--Republican incumbent Norm Coleman is clinging to a 200 vote lead in Minnesota over Democrat Al Franken, and Georgia GOP incumbent Saxby Chambliss faces Democrat Jim Martin in a December run-off. The Dems might yet get their filibuster-proof majority.
Stevens blew it in more ways than one.
Good riddance, you jerk.
And I guess that means Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport will need a new name.
