The Democrats hopes of achieving a filibuster proof majority was dealt a blow when Fox News called Kentucky for Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader. On the flipside, Elizabeth Dole has apparently lost her bid for reelection against Democrat Kay Hagan in North Carolina.
And Jeanne Shaheen has apparently defeated John Sununu in New Hampshire. Another Dem pick up, but not a big surprise.
McConnell, despite his stated love of earmarks, has been an effective minority leader for the GOP.
