From friend of the blog and "Nanny State" author David Harsanyi of the Denver Post:
This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.
"What you see in the picture I sent you is less than half of total flags," a Republican official emailed. "We estimate the total number to be around 12,000 small flags and one full size 3×5 flag."
I'm not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here.
One thing the Democrats could have done is given them away, say to a Denver post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Of course I'm not claiming that DNC Chairman Howard Dean or Barack Obama were behind the attempted flag dumping, but I just can't see something like this happening when Republicans are involved.
Last week Erick Erickson of Red State, who I met in St. Paul, went looking for American flags at the Democratic National Convention, but couldn't find any. He found some in the trash.
The flags were given out today at a Colorado Springs rally where John McCain and Sarah Palin spoke.
Obama's friend, former Weather Underground terrorist Bill "Bomber" Ayers, pictured above in 2001, was not available for comment.
But Damon Jones, an Obama spokesma and budding conspiracy theorist was, and he accused Republicans of "wrongfully" removing the flags from Invesco Field, where Obama gave his acceptance speech in front of carefully placed stryofoam Greek columns. Those props were important to the Democrats.
