Carter, as Alan Dershowitz pointed out shortly after that book was published, is someone whose even handedness should be questioned:
Journalist Jacob Laksin has documented the tens of millions of dollars that the Carter Center has accepted from Saudi Arabian royalty and assorted other Middle Eastern sultans, who, in return, Carter dutifully praised as peaceful and tolerant (no matter how despotic the regime). And these are only the confirmed, public donations.
Carter has also accepted half a million dollars and an award from Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, saying in 2001: "This award has special significance for me because it is named for my personal friend, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan." This is the same Zayed, the long-time ruler of the United Arab Emirates, whose $2.5 million gift to the Harvard Divinity School was returned in 2004 due to Zayed's rampant Jew-hatred. Zayed's personal foundation, the Zayed Center, claims that it was Zionists, rather than Nazis, who "were the people who killed the Jews in Europe" during the Holocaust. It has held lectures on the blood libel and conspiracy theories about Jews and America perpetrating Sept. 11.
And that's just the tip of the sandy iceberg.
The erstwhile peanut farmer is in the Middle East embarrassing the nation he once led.
Earlier today, Carter met with member Naser al-Shaer, the former deputy prime minister of the Hamas-led Palestinian government. One of the goals of Hamas is the complete destruction of Israel, which is why the the United States and other Western government boycotted the thug regime.
Carter's misery tour isn't over: He plans to travel to Syria to meet with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Syria.
Something else happened today. The State Department, stating the obvious, is urging Americans "to thoroughly consider the risks of travel to Syria and to take adequate precautions to ensure their safety." Coincidence? Probably not.
And finally, if anyone thinks Hamas has mellowed out, consider just last week Yunis al-Astal, a prominent Hamas member of the Palestinian parliament, made this declaration:
Today, Rome is the capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital, which has declared its hostility to Islam, and has planted the brothers of apes and pigs in Palestine in order to prevent the reawakening of Islam.
Al-Astal predicts Islam will soon conquer Rome.
I wonder what Jimmy Carter thinks about that? Brothers of apes and pigs.

Carter was/is/and shall remain clueless to the nuances of the middle east. He just doesn't get it.
ReplyDeleteLest we all forget, Jimmy thought Khomeni a good and decent man of god, and welcomed the results of the islamic revolution in the late 70's.
The reward for his faith: hostages.
Don't let anyone fool themselves, Iran is a priority reason as to why we're in the middle east, now - and Jimmy's one of the main reasons we need to be.
Thanks a heap, Jimmy.
