Poland 1795, McCain 2007

In Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Ishmael derisively refers to the "Pirate Powers" who carved up Poland in a series of annexations ending in 1795. Those nations were Prussia, Austria, and Russia.

Like late 18th century Poland, the McCain campaign appears ripe for annexations by new Pirate Powers--named Romney, Giuliani, and Fred Thompson, or perhaps a minor candidate or two.

The McCain camp is hemorrhaging staff--but don't worry about them, they'll get jobs with other campaigns. But McCain's shrinking but still sizable base of support will be eagerly sought by the Pirates.

However the ultimate prize will be McCain himself--an endorsement by the Arizona senator of one of the remaining Republican candidates for president.

McCain supporters of course view my opinions as alarmist, but I can't see him getting out of his predicament. His support of the immigration bill was the final straw for a lot of Republicans.
