Marathon Pundit is heading to Kansas!

Marathon Pundit is hitting the road again. After a 16 mile run on Sunday, July 22, I'm hitting the road for a week-long blog-vacation.

Why Kansas?

Well, it's the only Midwestern state I haven't visited.

Secondly, according to liberal author Thomas Frank's book, What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America, which I'm plodding through, the Sunflower State is the nation's least popular vacation destination.

A couple of books will serve as guidelines for my trip. Both are by William Least Heat-Moon, Blue Highways: A Journey into America and PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country.

The second one focuses almost exclusively on Chase County in eastern Kansas, the Flint Hills are partially located in that county.

By the way, Least Heat-Moon's other travel book, River-Horse: Across America by Boat, is not only a bit dull, but it contains several insults of Republicans and religious persons.

My first stop will be...well, I'm not saying. For reasons that will become apparent when I post on it, let's just say this place is located between Kansas City and Chase County.

These other sites are on my list. I hope to see them all:

The Santa Fe Trail

Even though I may end up hating it, Dodge City.

Greensburg

McPherson, consistently voted among the best small towns in America.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.

Liberal

I might make an out-of-Kansas detour to Pikes Peak in Colorado, and possibly to the Oklahoma panhandle.

Now, for those interviewed in being interviewed for the blog during my excellent Kansas adventure, or if you are interested in interviewing me, I am available. E-mail me at john.ruberry@sbcglobal.net

Note...I promise not to ask for money, free lodging, or any weird stuff.

I'm going to take tons of pictures, so I'll have a lot of good stuff when I get back to the Chicago area.

Any suggestions for my Kansas trip? Chime in here!
