Devastation in Kansas
The southwest suburban area of Chicago, where I grew up, is the tornado alley of Illinois. No one is sure why--it's believed it has something to do with the area's location near the "heat island" of Chicago as well as the southern end of Lake Michigan.
I never saw a tornado while living there, but I did see two funnel clouds--tornadoes that hadn't touched ground.
So I've always had a bit of fatalism about me because of that--living with the thought that within a few minutes, my life can turn upside down--just as it did for most of the residents of tiny Greensburg, Kansas last night.
Joni, a native of Greensburg, writes about the tragedy on her blog.
Tonight is another rough night on the Plains, as there are reports of tornadoes from South Dakota down to Oklahoma.
