Jordan's son to play hoops for Illini as a walk-on

The knock on University of Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber is that he's a great on-the-court coach, but a so-so recruiter. Weber took the Fighting Illini (Yes, they're still called that) to the NCAA championship game for the first time in 2005, but it was with players recruited by Bill Self, who now coaches at Kansas.

AP is reporting tonight that Jeffrey Jordan, son of the gentleman with the statue in front of the United Center in Chicago, will attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign--my alma mater--as a walk-on. Internet rumors, for once turning out to be true, reported a Jeffrey sighting in Champaign earlier this week.

The younger Jordan did not receive a scholarship offer, but will join the team as a walk-on. Which means the Jordan family will have to pay Jeffrey's tuition out of their pocket. However, since the Jordans live in Illinois, they'll only have to pay in-state tuition, which I'm sure is a big relief for them.

Jeffrey currently plays high school at Wilmette's Loyola Academy, he's a three time Catholic League all star, but as a college level recruit, he was viewed as a fit for a mid-major institution. Valparaiso, a Northwest Indiana Lutheran university that makes occasional appearances in the NCAA basketball tournament, made a scholarship offer to Jeffrey.

Oh, for those people looking for my long-promised University of Illinois military scholarship follow-up, I'll have it out Monday. My intent of course was to have it up earlier this week, but some unrelated things came up with myself and the principal of the story that dragged things out a bit.
