Trial lawyer--and backer of Edwards--against Ill. Primary move

A downstate Ill. backer of former Sen. John Edwards--yes, he has support in Illinois--is objecting to maneuvers by Ill. House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) to move up the date of the Illinois presidential primary from March 18 to February 5--to benefit the presumed presidential run of Sen Barack Obama (D-Ill).

And wouldn't you know the person complaining--the Edwards guy--is a trial lawyer.

Well, he can try to sue Madigan.

From the Bloomington Pantagraph:

A top Illinois fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says moving the state's 2008 primary election to boost U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's chances is a bad idea.

David Dorris, a trial lawyer from McLean County, said Thursday that a proposal floated Wednesday by House Speaker Michael Madigan "just doesn't sound right to me."

"There's something that just strikes me that it's not right to manipulate the date for one specific candidate," said Dorris, who has hosted a number of big-dollar fundraising events for the senator from North Carolina.

Dorris and his family have contributed more than $400,000 to state and federal candidates, including Edwards, Obama and Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who will have to sign off on the proposal if it is approved in the House and Senate.

Through a spokesperson, Blagojevich indicated he supports proposed earlier primary date.

Dorris has done well by Blagojevich, who recently appointed him to a trustee position at the University of Illinois, according to the Pantagraph. Dorris is a Obama supporter, but not for president in 2008 he says.

Off topic, yes, but isn't Pantagraph a cool name for a newspaper? Of Illinois dailies, only the Quincy Herald-Whig tops it in coolness.

The Pantagraph name caught the eye of Michael Moore during the filming of Fahrenheit 9/11. The "documentary" filmmaker altered a headline and changed the date of the story (actually a letter-to-the-editor that Moore morphed into a Pantagraph article) in an attempt to "prove" some point or another.
