Jesse Jackson Jr. asking for a vote for change, but will Rainbow/PUSH change?

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is taking advantage of the numerous scandals within Chicago government by asking for a vote for change.

From AP:

While he didn’t declare his candidacy, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. did nothing to dispel the notion that he’s taking on Mayor Daley in 2007.

In fact, he hit at “Hizzoner” quite hard during a Rainbow-Push Coalition meeting and voter registration drive Saturday morning."For the last 6 months we've read nothing and seen nothing but corruption, greed and malfeasance throughout much of city government – a mismanaged affirmative action program, a hired truck scandal, an asphalt kickback scheme, a major Colombian drug connection with dealers selling drugs while on the public payroll," he said.

Jackson is urging people to vote for change. He’s hoping for a registration drive that would rival the one started by the late Mayor Harold Washington 23 years ago.

In yesterday's Chicago Sun-Times column, Lynn Sweet does some analysis on a potential Jesse Junior-Mayor Daley showdown.

The irony of it all is that the organization that Jesse Jr.'s better-known father runs, Rainbow/PUSH, was fined $100,000 a few weeks ago by the Federal Election Commission for violating campaign finance laws. And it was at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters where Junior gave today's speech highlighting the troubles at Daley's City Hall, a detail somehow left out of the mainstream media reports about the possible ascension up to the mayor's office in Chicago.
