Here's another, "The Day the Earth Stood Still," by Willie Nile. The song draws its inspiration from the 1951 classic science fiction movie of the same name. Nile laments the empty streets, which reminds him of the stopping of electricity and more for an hour by Klaatu, the benevolent alien. 

Nile even works the foreboding phrase, ""Klaatu barada nikto," from the movie into this song.

It's a great work, although it's a bit too sympathetic to the lockdown insanity of 2020 for my taste.

Februrary 3 will bring yet another anniversary of "the Day the Music Died," when Buddy Holly, along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, died in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa.

Holly had a huge influence on the British Invasion bands, particularly the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Kinks. The Lubbock, Texas singer and songwriter was once seen as one of the giants of early rock and roll, but around 1990, that changed. I suspect reverse racism, as not only was Holly white, but he sounded "white," unlike Elvis Presley. 

You can't hate the media enough.

But Holly was a giant, who wrote many of his hits, which became expected of rock artists once the Beatles and Bob Dylan became superstars. 

Dylan, by the way, saw Holly perform in Minnesota on the tour that brought him to his last gig in Iowa.

Here's an underrated song from, if you live in America, a very underrated band, the Jam. Bruce Foxton wasn't the principal songwriter for the Band, Paul Weller was, but this tune, "Smithers-Jones," ranks among the best of the Jam's portfolio.

Foxton tells the sad story of Smithers-Jones, a middle manager who is not only laid off by his aloof boss, but then he learns his career is over as well.

Sadly, I know some people who have received the Smithers-Jones treatment.

This is the original version of "Smithers-Jones" was a B-Side to the British hit "When You're Young."

It was recorded for the Jam's Setting Sons album, with strings and vocals only, along the lines of "Eleanor Rigby." 

The first cut works the best. Never out-Beatle the Beatles.
