150 years ago today: Siege of Vicksburg begins

On May 18, 1863, the Siege of Vicksburg began. The battle for the Mississippi river town lasted until July 4--it was a Union victory. That battle, along with the northern victory at Gettysburg the day before, was the turning point for Union forces in our Civil War.

I visited the Vicksburg battlefield in 2008. I planned to stay for just a few hours, but I ended up hanging around for a day and a half.

Below you will find my blog posts from that trip, one that I urge you to take as well.
