Memphis area: Well-paid Teamsters sanitation workers on strike

Teamsters sanitation workers in the Memphis area are on strike in the Memphis area. The walk out effects 200,000 residential customers and 10,000 businesses that use Republic Services to haul their trash. Recycling services are also effected.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal has an interesting take:
The company has said that employees driving its waste trucks in the Memphis area make an average income of about $58,000 a year, about a third more than the median household income in Shelby County. Some of the most senior waste haulers make "upwards of $85,000," the company said.
