The Rainmakers: Government Cheese

For a month I tied my Saturday Musical Selection to the presidential election--and my support for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

One of the reasons they lost is that the Republican duo had to compete against free stuff. It's hard to beat something for nothing.

But in the long run--and remember--I'm the Marathon Pundit--the bill comes due.

The free cheese that our government gives out--and those Obama phones--well they aren't really free.

The costs of the entitlement society are massive.

Back in 1986, the Kansas City band The Rainmakers decried handouts such as government cheese.
Give a man a free house and he'll bust out the windows
Put his family on food stamps, now he's a big spender
no food on the table and the bills ain't paid
'Cause he spent it on cigarettes and P.G.A.
They'll turn us all into beggars 'cause they're easier to please
They're feeding our people that government cheese.

Yes, I believe that as a society we need to care for those who can't care for themselves. But there is something seriously wrong when one in five adult Americans is on food stamps.
