Hope for GOP in Michigan: Franken speaks at Dem fundraiser

Franken monster
Michigan Republicans got an unexpected boost last night when caustic and buffoonish Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) spoke at a Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Detroit. Franken riled up the crowd by repeating John McCain's statement from the 2008 campaign about the auto industry, "there are some jobs that aren't coming back to Michigan."

McCain's remark wasn't the most politically expedient thing to say, but he was right. Detroit lost one-quarter of its population in the last decade. Will it return to the primeval state Dire Straits sang about in "Telegraph Road?"

Franken also attended a fundraiser for Democratic US Senator Debbie Stabenow in Ann Arbor.

Good news could be on the way for Michigan Republicans.
